Soy milk, which should more accurately be called the less appetizing, “soybean juice,” is nothing more than that; it is just a byproduct of soybeans. While the soy milk you buy at the grocery store is produced in a factory, it wasn’t always made that way. Soy milk can be in just a few easy steps using very little equipment. So, can you make soy milk without a machine? Absolutely.
To make your own soy milk at home, you’re going to need the following items:
- A couple large pots
- Soy beans
- Water
- A blender or a food processor
- Sugar
- A Ladle
- A cheesecloth for straining
- A measuring cup
Step 1
The first thing you need to do is soak your soybeans overnight. This will make the beans soft. The longer you let them soak, the softer they will become. It usually takes about eight to 12 hours, so I like to put them in a pot of water right before I go to bed. That way they’re ready when I wake up.
Step 2
Rinse and clean your beans.
Step 3
Add 1 cup of soybeans to your blender or food processor along with 3 cups of water. Blend them together for about 30 to 60 seconds.
Step 4
Pour the soy puree through a cheesecloth to strain out the pulp. You’ll need to do this a few times to get all the pulp out. You don’t have to discard the pulp, either. You can set it aside to make okara.
Step 5
Once you have strained the mixture, pour it into a large pot and bring it to a boil. Let the soy milk boil for 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 6
Stir in sugar to taste. You can use as much or as little sugar as you want; it’s entirely up to you.
Step 7
Let the soy milk cool then refrigerate.
As you can see, minus soaking the beans, the entire process takes about 30 minutes. You can save yourself a lot of money making your own soy milk like this and have fun doing it. Now, before you go off and make gallons of soy milk, keep in mind that fresh soy milk does not last as long as store-bought because it does not have any preservatives. Fresh soy milk will keep for about three days in the fridge.
Also, learn if soy milk is vegan, after all, you should know this before starting to prepare it!
